Championing Thoroughbred Aftercare

Every horse is different, and so is every next chapter. Some transition to second careers, while others retire to quieter lives in pasture settings. Every horse is different, and so is every next chapter. Some transition to second careers, while others retire to quieter lives in pasture settings. We proudly support leading aftercare organizations, including Old Friends at Cabin Creek, ReRun, and Equine Advocates, and remain actively involved in placing our retired horses in environments where they can thrive.

Our responsibility to our horses doesn’t end at the finish line. It’s just the beginning of a lifelong commitment. We believe that every thoroughbred deserves a safe, dignified, and fulfilling life after racing. That’s why we proudly support nationally recognized aftercare organizations and partner with programs that ensure our retired athletes are placed in loving, secure environments. From hands-on involvement to financial contributions, philanthropy and ethical stewardship are at the heart of who we are.

Aftercare Matters at Sackatoga

Caring for racehorses goes well beyond the finish line. At Sackatoga Stable, we are committed to responsible ownership and thoughtful aftercare, ensuring our horses are supported throughout every stage of their lives.

  • We proudly support leading aftercare organizations, including Old Friends at Cabin Creek, ReRun, and Equine Advocates, and remain actively involved in placing our retired horses in environments where they can thrive.

  • Every horse is different, and so is every next chapter. Some transition to second careers, while others retire to quieter lives in pasture settings. We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all retirement approach.
  • Whenever possible, we stay connected, following their progress and celebrating their lives beyond racing.

Industry Advocacy & Leadership

  • Jack Knowlton, Sackatoga’s managing partner, has been deeply involved in industry-wide initiatives that have created real, tangible change in the thoroughbred racing industry. From serving on New York’s Task Force on Retired Racehorses to organizing Saratoga Aftercare Summits (2015 & 2016), Jack has put his money where his mouth is.

  • In collaboration with The Jockey Club, Jack helped boost transparency around post-racing placements.

  • Sackatoga is active within the Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association (TOBA), promoting equine welfare, ethical horsemanship, and industry-wide education.

  • Jack and Sackatoga Management participate in prominent conferences—such as the national Thoroughbred Owner Conference—where aftercare and owner education are key topics.

Supporting New York’s Aftercare Movement

  • We align with NYRA’s initiatives, including summit events and per-start fees that help fund retirement programs like TAKE THE LEAD and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) .

  • We contribute to New York Thoroughbred Aftercare Day, showcasing retired horses and spotlighting services like New Vocations, ReRun, and others.

Why This Matters for Sackatoga Owners

  • Holistic Care: Our investment isn’t just for the track. It’s for after the track, too.

  • Ethical Commitment: You support an ownership model grounded in responsibility and integrity.

  • Industry Influence: By championing policy and best practices, Sackatoga contributes to safer futures for all racehorses.

Life After the Track

Every Sackatoga horse has a next chapter. Here are a few of their stories:

  • Blitz To Win transitioned to a loving private farm, where he continues to be a cherished partner. His owner regularly shares updates, allowing the Sackatoga team to follow along as he enjoys life beyond racing.

  • Blushing Banker found a unique second act as a star, participating in historic reenactments in Williamsburg, Virginia, and thriving in a role that reflects both her presence and versatility.

  • Some of our horses are retired to established aftercare organizations, including Old Friends, where one Sackatoga retiree, Doc n Roll, has been cared for for more than 17 years. We support that commitment not just in principle, but in practice, contributing $5,000 for every new horse we purchase to help ensure lifelong care for retired Thoroughbreds.

  • Not every horse follows the same path. Some require more thoughtful placement due to physical or behavioral challenges, and Sackatoga remains committed to finding the right outcome for them. Horses like Greek Strider, Union Trail, Tiz Eternal, & Tropical Candy had unique retirement needs, but all have found permanent homes on private farms where they will be loved and well cared for for the rest of their lives.
